Reusable Water Balloons!

Reusable Water Balloons!

Preschool Social Academy has recently decided to start using reusable water balloons this summer. Before now, we did not want to use water balloons due to how wasteful they are, as well as how dangerous they are for local wildlife such as birds, who mistake them for food.

These ones are much more eco-friendly. When normal water balloons are disposed of, they pose a threat not only to local wildlife but also to marine wildlife, because the little pieces are so small and easy for all sorts of animals to swallow. These reusable water balloons allow us to have fun while keeping ducks safe! Our reusable water balloons are better for the environment and much easier to clean up compared to one-use water balloons.

These balloons also are much easier to just refill and keep going, allowing water balloon fights to last as long as the children want.

How Often Should I Change my Child’s Mask?

So, I know the guidance came out about a year ago that said children should come to school in one mask with two or more changes in their bag. Then everyone went out (or let’s be honest, went online) and bought masks like crazy. Cut to over a year later and we’re pulling into the school’s parking lot at some ungodly morning hour realizing we forgot to grab those masks we hung out to dry the night before (never put them in the dryer by-the-way because they shrink). In a brief panic, we find ourselves thinking, – “Oh yeah, you need a mask! Just wear this one. I’m pretty sure it’s clean.” Justifying in your head it’s only been used by my child. It’s their germs. It’s better than nothing. And it is! (Whether or not your child will agree to reuse said mask is a whole other matter. I am guessing it has something to do with temperament and if you’re lucky probably their age).
It is. It is definitely better than nothing. But just a heads up that in some schools we’re actually seeing sores on the mask area of the face being diagnosed as Impetigo.
Impetigo is a bacterial skin infection caused by Streptococcus and Staphylococcus bacteria. It is commonly known as ‘school sores.”

But that is why at PSA you’ll find disposable masks at each entryway door.

Behold! The Best Fitting Masks for the "Littles"

Finding masks that fit the children’s faces has been hard. Fitting masks is very important for slowing the spread of COVID, but most masks are too big for their small faces. Luckily, PSA recently found these face masks from Halyard…

Social emotional needs during pandemic

Social emotional needs during pandemic

In person schools are essential for meeting the social emotional needs of children during the pandemic. The AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) strongly advocates for schools to have students presently in school, as there is evidence that the academic, mental and physical benefits outweigh the risks of coronavirus. The risks have already been documented from children having classes at home rather than in person, including but not limited to social isolation, and they fall behind academically, as virtual learning often makes it difficult for teachers to adjust their teaching methods to fit the needs of children. Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, also believes that closing schools is not always necessary. Children not in person schools lose access to socializing with peers, which puts them behind compared to children who are learning in person. They do not learn the necessary groundwork for learning how to process their emotions correctly, feeling and showing empathy for others, and establishing and maintaining positive relationships. This is especially true for young children, as preschool is especially important for assisting with early social emotional development.
